Recycling Plastic Trash into Floor Mats

Teacher: Waras, with overall project coordination by R. Chusnu Yuli Setyo

If you hear the word “trash,” surely what comes to mind is a pile of waste that smells terrible.  The amount of landfill waste that is unable to be handled properly will cause various problems either directly or indirectly for the people.

Today, one of the biggest problems in our country (Indonesia) is plastic trash because there are many people who use plastic to wrap things we use or buy every day. There is so much plastic waste in our environment and it can’t decompose in a reasonable amount of time.  It takes at least 100 or even 1,000 years.  It pollutes the land and is bad for the environment.

But, don’t worry because we have a solution that provides additional benefits.  We can make many products from garbage, especially plastic trash.  One such product is a floor mat.  These pictures show how to make these mats from discarded plastic.

We can sell  these mats to stores, supermarkets, handicraft markets, and traditional markets by offering them at a lower price.

Hi, great job on the project. I never knew that plastic garbage could be made into something as nice as a floor mat. I am from New York and it is great to see everyone thinking about the environment.

I’m Zaa from Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) Lamongan, East Java, Indonesia, and thanks for your comment, Alex 🙂
Yeah…recycling plastic trash is our way of doing something for the environment. People in my community, like people elsewhere, use lots of plastic products, most of which end up in landfills and don’t decompose for a very, very long time. So, we decided to do something about that by making these useful products…from trash. 😀

It’s very cool that a lot of countries are getting involved or thinking about our environment. Plastic trash is a problem everywhere and you’re right it takes a lot of time for it to decompose. Good idea to use trash to make things.

This is a good idea. We’ve heard about the reuse of waste, but not many are able to realize such a great idea but you made it happen. Good luck to you.

When I first think of trash, the first thing that comes to mind is something smelly and really disgusting! I like how you made us take a step back and look at trash with a different perspective. I didn’t expect that plastic bags took that long just to decompose! It’s great how they can make mats out of recycled bags, because its’s reusing our resources. Since people know how to make mats, maybe they can create a “plastic bag”. It would be a bigger plastic bag made up of other plastic bags so you can just used recycled bags instead of creating new ones, you just have one huge one!

I think that it is a great idea to use the plastic bags to make other products. Recycling the bags will reduce the landfills. In Hawaii many stores will give you a reward of around 5 cents if you bring your own plastic bags instead of theirs. In my house we have a pile of plastic bags that we save and use for later.

This idea not only helps with recycling and reducing the land fills, it also helps prevent animals from eating it and being harmed from it.

I thought that this was really cool how you can turn something as simple as trash and turn it into something with an intricate design and make it beautiful.
It is a really good idea to make trash into many different things that can be useful in our everyday lives.
    Good Job!

I think that this is an awesome idea! Plastic trash is a huge problem all over the world, and it seems to be really bad where you are. Lots of people don’t know what to do with it so they just throw it into the environment. I also didn’t know it took that long for plastic to decompose. And once plastic is decomposed it poses and even greater threat to the environment because after its decomposed its just microscopic pieces of the same problem as before, and even harder to clean up. I think that recycling the plastic into something else very useful like a mat is a great idea. I didn’t know it was possible to do something like that with something as simple as old used plastic!

Wow! This is so cool! I find that this is such a great idea to reduce the amount of plastic being made and also reduce trash. I’d totally get one of those bags made of recycled plastic! Plus, that way, you can make money for doing something great for our mother earth!

To Dani L., That’s good idea about plastic bags. I hope that we can apply it in my country.

With this project, I hope we can raise awareness about the need to address global warming and to increase women’s economic participation.

To all readers, this is a good project of Indonesia, especially Lamongan city. With this project, we not only decrease plastic garbage, but also help increase people’s income.

Yes, I agree with you. And we can help reduce global warming effect with more projects like this.

Is it difficult to set up similar projects elsewhere? I am looking at ways to use plastic waste on the island of Lombok, Indonesia. There is a huge amount of plastic waste here on land and in the waters around. Great idea, those mats!
